He received his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 1989 and worked as an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Harvard under the direction of Professor E.J. Corey.
In 1990, he began his industrial career at Bayer pharmaceuticals in West Haven CT.  He worked as a medicinal chemist in the field of immunology until 1993 when he transferred to Wuppertal Germany to do research in the cardiovascular (lipid lowering) division at Bayer's main pharmaceutical campus.  He returned to West Haven in 1995 and subsequently was asked to lead the Medicinal Chemistry group focused on diabetes and obesity research.   In 1999, Rick accepted a position at Pfizer's Groton CT campus as the head of cancer Medicinal Chemistry.  He spent a year on secondment at the Pfizer site in Sandwich, England where he was asked to head of the Medicinal Chemistry group for sexual health before returning to Groton in 2003.  Shortly after his return to Groton, he was promoted to Executive Director of Discovery operations at Pfizer's Groton campus with responsibility for the antibacterial, immunology and cancer (AIC) therapeutic area zones.
In July of 2005, Rick established and led a Chemistry sourcing group within the Discovery Chemistry Discipline.  In 2008, Rick was asked to consolidate all pre-clinical, Research outsourcing services in the Chemistry, Biology and PDM space and lead the newly formed group called External Research Solutions.  This group, with staff at each of the major Pfizer Research sites, is accountable for enabling and maintaining the network of external CRO, supplier, partner and third party organizations that help Pfizer deliver the Research portfolio.
In February-2011, Rick has been named as head of Research in Asia and asked to establish the newly announced Anti-infective Research Unit in China.   He will move to China in April of this year with his family.
